However, quality varies widely—poor material choices can cause leakage, cracking, and premature failure. 1. Confirm Core Raw Material: PVC vs TPU Fabric

The coated fabric is the foundation of tank durability, water tightness and environmental adaptability. PVC and TPU are the two mainstream materials.

1.1 PVC Coated Fabric Flexible Water Tank

PVC fabric is the most popular economical solution for general water storage projects.

Specifications: Common base cloth options: 500D, 840D, 1000D, 1300D; fabric thickness ranges from 0.9 mm – 2.0 mm.

Advantages: Excellent water impermeability, stable high-frequency welding performance, easy on-site repair, competitive pricing for bulk orders.

Limitations: Standard PVC grades may harden below -10°C and yellow under prolonged UV exposure. However, modified formulations can extend the operating range from -30°C to +70°C with added UV stabilizers. Always specify your climate and exposure conditions to the supplier.

Best for: Short- to medium-term outdoor use, agricultural irrigation, construction site temporary water storage, emergency disaster relief with limited budget.

1.2 TPU Coated Fabric Flexible Water Tank

TPU fabric represents the high-end premium option for rigorous working conditions.

Advantages: Outstanding low-temperature resistance, maintaining flexibility down to -40°C (high-grade TPU down to -50°C); superior UV and anti-aging performance. TPU fabric is approximately 20–30% lighter than equivalent-strength PVC, offering better portability for military and field applications. Non-toxic and eco-friendly, suitable for storing drinking water.

Limitations: Higher raw material and production cost; stricter welding requirements during manufacturing.

2. Select Proper Fabric Density & GSM Rating

Denier (D) and GSM (grams per square meter) directly determine tensile strength, tear resistance and puncture resistance.

Finished flexible tank fabric typically ranges from 1800 to 3000+ GSM depending on coating thickness:

Light-duty 500D–840D PVC: 1800–2200 GSM, suitable for small-capacity tanks and temporary short-cycle usage.

Standard commercial 1000D–1300D PVC: 2200–2800 GSM, most widely used for medium-volume water storage.

Heavy-duty 1300D PVC or TPU: 2800+ GSM, ideal for large-volume tanks, frequent moving, and scenarios with risk of friction from gravel and sharp objects.

Note: Always confirm with your supplier whether GSM refers to base cloth alone or finished coated material. Higher D and GSM deliver stronger abrasion resistance and longer service life, yet increase total product weight and cost. Do not over-specify if your application does not require heavy-duty performance.

3. Determine Required Volume & Tank Shape

Flexible water tanks support customized dimensions and two primary shapes:

Square / Rectangular flat tank: Ideal for flat ground, indoor warehouse, construction yards; easy to lay and fix with tension rings.

Octagonal / Circular foldable tank: Common for outdoor open areas, emergency fire water storage; uniform stress distribution on tank walls.

Tips: Always reserve a 10%–15% volume margin. Never run the tank at full rated capacity continuously to reduce pressure on seams and lower leakage risks.

4. Check Functional Surface Treatments

UV Stabilized Treatment: Mandatory for tanks placed outdoors year-round. Anti-UV coating slows down photoaging, prevents surface embrittlement and prolongs service life.

Cold Resistant Formulation: Choose low-temperature flexible formula if the tank works in winter or high-altitude areas to avoid fabric cracking.

Food-Grade Non-Toxic Coating: Critical if storing potable drinking water. For potable water storage, choose materials with NSF/FDA/food-grade certification. Both PVC and TPU are available in food-safe formulations—specify the requirement clearly to your supplier.

Seam technology: High-frequency thermal welding is preferred over simple glue bonding. Welded seams feature better tightness and longer lifespan.

Accessories: Select corrosion-resistant PP or stainless steel valves, drain ports, overflow ports and lashing D-rings. Confirm port size matches your pipeline system.

Reinforcement strips: Check if corners, pipe openings and stress points are reinforced with extra fabric layers; these positions are where leakage most frequently occurs.
